Abstract

This study was carried out to provide better direction of the dental hygiene education curriculum in Korea by comparing and analyzing the object and curriculum of the existing 3-year dental hygiene education.
The analysis on the object of the dental hygiene education shows that prevention of dental disease, dental health education, public dental health and dental health care are more important that the other objects. To see if this analysis was specifically reflected in the real curriculum of the dental hygiene education, deepened study was carried out.
Firstly, it is suggested that the efficiency in terms of the constitution in the major-general education subjects ratio need to be improved by raising the ratio of the major related supplementary subjects.
Secondly, the existing status has to be improved that dental hygienists role as educators has been emphasized according as dental health care centers are increasing in the elementary school, but the constitution of the teacher training course in no more than 2.0% in the whole credits.
Thirdly, with regard to the category of the dental hygiene clinics, the clinical training is opened as the highest (205 credits: 53%) credits, but in the real almost colleges - without their own affiliated dental hospital - are committing students to the other medical institution. What is worse is that the committed education is not well performed.
Fourthly, the analysis of the educational objects shows that the category of the dental public health education and research is the most important category, but regarding the existing established subjects, it is found that this category has less established subjects than the other categories. In this reason this category should be improved.
Fifthly, above all situation suggests that the existing curriculum need be improved, in that while prevention of dental disease, dental health education, public dental health and dental health care are regarded as important ones in the object of the dental hygiene education, this importance is not well reflected in the existing curriculum.
Sixthly, in terms of the status of the national examination-related subjects, established credits of this category takes up 56.2% of the whole major credits, which means that the dental hygiene education curriculum is centering on the national examination. This situation need be reformed as early as possible.
